The Mediating Role of CSR Perception Between Environmental Consciousness and Carbon Offsetting Attitudes

by HAVADER Editör Ekibi

How many times have you clicked past the option at checkout asking "would you like to offset your carbon emissions for a few extra dollars"? This study tries to unpack exactly the psychology behind that decision: what actually convinces people to pay for voluntary carbon offsetting?

The aim was to determine how an airline's perceived corporate social responsibility (CSR) shapes the relationship between environmental consciousness and offsetting behavior. The question, in short: does an environmentally conscious passenger automatically pay to offset, or does something else get in the way?

Using an integrated analytical framework, the research found that environmental consciousness affects offsetting attitudes mostly indirectly, through CSR perception, rather than directly. In other words: even an environmentally conscious passenger won't open their wallet if they don't believe the airline is making a genuine, visible effort. But that same passenger becomes far more receptive to offsetting when they believe the airline is truly committed to sustainability.

The value of this finding is that it gives airlines a clear strategic takeaway: simply saying "be eco-friendly" isn't enough. What actually moves the needle is making the company's own sustainability efforts visible and credible to passengers. An everyday analogy: the difference between a brand claiming "we use recyclable packaging" and one that actually shows proof it does. The latter builds trust; the former stays a slogan.

In the end, this research shows that meeting sustainability goals in aviation isn't just a technical challenge — it's a matter of trust and communication. The more transparently and concretely airlines convey their emission-reduction efforts to passengers, the more passengers are willing to reach into their own pockets to contribute.
