Student Awareness on Energy Efficiency, Waste Management, and Carbon Footprint in Green Airport Applications

Airports get talked about far less than aircraft, but they quietly form aviation's "invisible" carbon footprint through energy use and waste generation. This study turns the lens on the awareness level of tomorrow's aviation professionals — today's students.
Based on a survey of 400 undergraduate and associate-degree students trained in green airport practices at Cappadocia University, the research aimed to examine awareness of energy efficiency, waste management, and carbon footprint in relation to factors like education level, gender, and coursework.
The findings draw an interesting line: education level (undergraduate vs. associate degree) and gender showed no significant effect on awareness, but having taken a dedicated environmental sustainability course clearly boosted awareness, particularly around carbon footprint and waste management. That actually makes intuitive sense: it's not abstract "environmental consciousness" that moves the needle, but concrete, curriculum-embedded education.
The value of this study is the clear message it sends to aviation education institutions: if you want to raise sustainability awareness, it has to be a concrete course built into the curriculum, not a general talking point. An everyday analogy: it's the difference between putting up a "sort your trash" poster at school and actually teaching students a real lesson on recycling — the latter creates lasting behavior change, while the former often goes unnoticed on the wall.
In the end, the research shows students' overall awareness is already high, and that awareness carries over into more sustainability-minded behavior — suggesting that with the right educational investment, aviation's next generation could be far better equipped on environmental responsibility than the current one.
