Ground Handling Services in Aviation from a Gender Perspective

Dozens of people work behind the scenes to get an aircraft ready for takeoff: baggage handlers, ramp agents, fuel crews. This world of "ground handling" has long been perceived as male-dominated. This study listens, in their own words, to how much that perception has — or hasn't — changed for women working in it today.
The aim was to examine women's experiences and the gender-based challenges they face through in-depth interviews with eight women working in various positions at Ankara Esenboğa Airport. Ground handling involves flexible schedules, time pressure, and physically demanding, high-stress operational conditions — conditions that can become an extra barrier in women's recruitment and career advancement.
Analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method, the interviews revealed eight main themes: physical challenges and working conditions, expectations of after-hours availability, social and legal rights for women, career development and representation issues, institutional policies, psychological and emotional impacts, gender-based inequalities, and coping strategies.
What this study contributes is turning a vague observation like "women are underrepresented in ground handling" into concrete, nameable problems. An everyday analogy: it's similar to women working on a construction site facing not just the physical difficulty of the job, but also the perception that "this job isn't for women" — the expectation around the job becomes as much a barrier as the job itself. For airlines and ground handling companies, this study shows that simply saying "let's hire more women" isn't enough — work-life balance, career advancement opportunities, and institutional support mechanisms need concrete redesign.
The study emphasizes that ensuring equal career opportunities in the sector is no longer an optional goodwill gesture, but a strategic necessity.
