A Multidimensional View of Burnout Among Air Traffic Controllers

Picture an air traffic controller tracking dozens of aircraft on a screen at once, making sure each stays a safe distance apart — and having to do it for hours, with zero margin for error. This job is almost a textbook case for burnout research. This study examines the actual structure of that burnout in multiple dimensions.

The goal was to use the multidimensional Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) to analyze the relationship between burnout's "core symptoms" (exhaustion, emotional impairment) and its "secondary symptoms" (psychological and psychosomatic complaints), and to determine whether these differ by demographic variables.

Analysis of data from 355 controllers across various air traffic control units in Türkiye produced a result that's reassuring at first glance but worth reading carefully: overall burnout levels were low, but moderate burnout appeared specifically in the exhaustion dimension. In other words, controllers generally don't feel "burned out," but there's a serious warning sign about their energy levels. No significant differences emerged by gender or experience in overall burnout, but regression analyses showed core symptoms — especially exhaustion and emotional impairment — significantly predicted secondary symptoms, i.e., psychological complaints.

What this study contributes is showing the importance of treating burnout not as a single yes/no label, but as a chain where each link feeds the next. An everyday analogy: it's similar to an athlete looking "generally fit" overall, while overload in a single muscle group (here, exhaustion) risks turning into a serious injury over time — ignoring the early warning signal can invite a much bigger problem.

In the end, this research sends a clear message to air traffic control organizations: relying on general burnout surveys and concluding "everything's fine" isn't enough. Tracking early warning signals like exhaustion separately is critical, both for controllers' health and for the safety of air traffic itself.
